I have just gobbled up this book in two hours. It is quite thin, 266 pages, but it has a huge impact on me. The title is Epitaph Road by David Patneaude.

The story was set somewhere in far future..around Year 2060-2097. There was this plague nicknamed Elisha's Bear that killed off 97% of the male population in the entire world. That's when the society changed, because it's mostly women now. There were no longer wars, crime and such, and women were in power, while the male population were kept to a minimum (19 female to 1 male).

The male lead is just a fourteen-year-old, waiting to pass his trials (the world's examination standard to get the job you want). To cut the story short, he and two other girls found out that Elisha Bear was actually released by a group of female scientists who felt that males were leading humanity to brink of destruction. This group was called Brightlight.

In the later part of the story, they met up with another group of scientists named Afterlight. There were two groups, an all-female one focusing on making a vaccine for Elisha Bear..and the all-male one sinisterly making another Elisha Bear for females! One of the two female leads, Sunday was even trapped in a cell to be tested on..and she died.

The ending was--they blew up the laboratory where the female version of Elisha Bear was. Then, the survivors emailing the entire world's students that were sitting for the trials the whole story, and reviving an old website to tell the truth.

Yeah I know the ending is nothing much. But they were just kids; what could they do to oppose the PAC (the global women leading political power)? The most they could do was to tell the future generations the truth before it was buried under time.

The plague's name was Elisha Bear..due to contexts of the Bible. Have a look at this:

"And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in The Name of The Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria" (2 Kings 2:23-25 KJV)

There are some who believe that Elisha "went too far" in his response to the "little children" who mocked him. Did Elisha go too far?

I guess its an appropriate name for the plague as the similarity was there. The females had enough of males mocking and abusing them and "called" upon this plague to clear them. Just like what Elisha did to call upon two bears to kill the children who mocked at him.

Bah, throughout the story, my heart was aching..especially for those women whom lost their husbands, fathers, sons..and even newborns. How sad and fragile this world is!
